The Grand Opening of Mediterranean Cosmos Thessaloniki 19 October, 2005


The Grand Opening of Mediterranean Cosmos, the first and largest shopping and leisure centre of its kind in Greece, took place on Wednesday 19 October 2005.

Owned and developed by Lamda Development (60.1%) and Sierra Charagionis (39.9%), Mediterranean Cosmos will have the best international and Greek retailers in 214 shops, which includes among others 37 restaurants and cafes, multicinemas (11 screens), and a supermarket/ hypermarket.

The shopping centre will also have 2.600 parking spaces, a kindergarten, baby changing and feeding rooms, an information desk, banks, pharmacy, dry cleaning, hair salon, photo shop, a church and full access to the disabled people.

Mediterranean Cosmos invites people of all ages, and offers conveniences, high standards and quality products and services. It will offer about 2.500 working opportunities and is expected to contribute to the overall growth and development of Thessaloniki .

More than 2.500 people who represented the political, the business, the church, the cultural and the intellectual community, were present and enjoyed the most impressive and glamorous event of the inauguration of the Centre which brought the air and the feeling of the similar grand European markets in Thessaloniki.

The opening was a unique cultural and recreational event, a festivity which, at the same time presented an example of the functions and the services which will be offered by the Centre to the public of Thessaloniki.

The guests had the opportunity to walk around and see all the sites, of Mediterranean Cosmos, the shops the food court. The opening started early with the blessing ceremony of the Metropolitan Bishop Pergis , Mr.Evangelos and Metropolitan Bishop Tyrolois and Serentiou, Mr. Panteleimon and then followed the various events.

The event included presentations by Mr. Dimitris Sioufas, Minister of Development, Mr. Nicolaos Tsiartsionis, Minister of Macedonian – Thrace, Mr. Panagiotis Psomiadis, Prefect of the department of Thessaloniki, Mr. Vasilis Kartalis, Mayor of Pilea , Mr. Apostolos Tamvakakis, President of LAMDA Development S.A., Mr. Lambros Anagnostopoulos, Chief Executive Officer of LAMDA Development S.A. and Mr. Theodoros Charagionis, President of Sierra Charagionis.

The peak of the event was the fantastic show which followed at the amphitheatre by the well known artists Valerio Festi and Monica Maimone. A very interesting exhibition of the well known photographer brothers, George and Giannis Zarzonis which took place in both closed and open air areas, attracted the admiration of the public.

Mediterranean Cosmos opened its doors to the public on October 20th 2005.
